Bilingual Secondary School

The Bilingual Secondary School for students in Grades 7 to 9 is a unique bilingual three-year integration programme which prepares students step by step for a consequent entry into Swiss Gymnasium (Swiss High School) with the Goal Swiss Matura or for an attendance of the International School with the Goal to achieve the IB Diploma.

Who should choose the Bilingual Secondary School?

For international students with the ambition to complete the Swiss Matura and to secure free access to the leading Swiss universities, the bilingual Secondary School for Grades 7 to 9 offers a path of step-wise integration into the Swiss educational system including intensive language support in German and French as mandatory languages. Swiss students with the according recommendations from their previous school (Sekundarschulempfehlung bzw. Realschulempfehlung ohne Lernzielanpassung) can enter this programme to benefit from its international atmosphere and build their English skills, while maintaining the option to continue in the short-term Gymnasium after grade 9 (grades permitting).

After attending the Bilingual Secondary School throughout grade 9, students aim to transfer to the Swiss Gymnasium on Zugerberg in order to obtain the federal Swiss Matura entitling them to gain free access to Federal Technical Universities and Cantonal Universities. Depending on the students’ personal goals and potential, the programme also offers a full Secondary School Degree for those students who are looking for vocational training after grade 9 or entry in commercial schools and upper-secondary specialized schools.

The bilingual structure of the programme with a combination of subjects in German and English as well as an extensive support options in the field of language acquisition opens up international perspectives for students, which are extended by our unique Swiss-international school community and its culture. Hence, the programme offers a privileged opportunity for international students to gradually integrate into the Swiss educational system.

Benefiting from individual support

In order to systematically foster and support students in their individual development, the teachers actively take on the role of a learning coach. Each student’s individual development is monitored closely across Grades 7 to 9 and additional support measures as well as self-organized learning will be individually coordinated. Modern teaching methods in heterogeneous small groups ensure that each student can pursue and achieve his/her individual learning goals.

The student’s background and educational preference as sole purposes, the bilingual secondary school provides individual support, adjusted to the potential of the student, to achieve individualized learning goals. Learning progress and perspectives are continuously reviewed. Through close liaising with the Swiss Gymnasium starting from Grade 8, integration into the subsequent programme of the Swiss Gymnasium with the aim of achieving the Swiss Matura can be supported depending on the level of performance and maturity.

The value of bilingualism and language support

Bridging the gap between Swiss and International School programmes, the Bilingual Secondary school consistently promotes the bilingual education in German and English as well as French as a third language. This programme builds on the students’ language skills and specifically supports the improvement of German, English or French.

Additional language courses, including fast-track options, are offered according to the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for German as a foreign language with certificates from the Goethe Institute, for English as a foreign language with Certificates by Cambridge Assessment English and for French with Delf Certificates. These language certificates are internationally acknowledged and valued all over the world. This allows students a fast-linguistic integration into the bilingual school environment. According to the students' previous knowledge and learning progress, the level-specific classification in groups of 2-4 students with experienced and qualified teachers allow greater personal attention to ensure maximum learning progress.
